The Fishbowl Collective

If you live in Moab, there’s a good chance you’ve been to the Fishbowl either because you lived there, had a friend who lived there, or you’ve been to a party or community organizing meeting at the house. The Fishbowl (the latest of many names the house has gone by) has served as an affordable, community-oriented co-living space for at least the last 15 years, and has allowed so many people a stable place to land and put down roots in the community. But now the house is on the market, and Moab risks losing one of its last affordable rentals.

So we current renters had a crazy (but actually, totally possible) idea: create a nonprofit to buy the house from the current owners and keep it as an affordable, community-oriented, and resident-controlled house forever. The nonprofit will fundraise $120,000 in donations, community loans and grants for its down payment, in order to secure a low enough mortgage to keep rents low for the foreseeable future.
